The last time Drew and I left for an overnight trip by ourselves was when Sydney was Elijah's age. Yeah. So once the baby was done nursing, we planned a little getaway to Victoria, B.C. and just spent three days there, eking out one last international trip just a month before our passports expired. I'd forgotten how inspiring it is to take in the sights and experiences of a new place...it's been a while!
And while we hadn't purposefully planned our trip to coincide with the Winter Olympics in nearby Vancouver, the timing actually proved to be fun - watching host country Canada's coverage of the games was an interesting twist. They are so apologetic - and know it. I found this quote true to their nature: "That's the Canadian character, to say "I'm sorry," whether on a crowded Skytrain or standing in a "lineup" for tickets. If you won the lottery, they would probably apologize when handing you the check: "Sorry it's not more." (Linda Robertson, Miami Herald, 2/23/10)
In any case, we found the Canadians in Victoria plenty hospitable.
